Stan Lee: Andrew ‘As Good As Tobey Was’ In ‘Spider-Man’

Fans might be skeptical of the upcoming “Spider-Man” reboot (just five years after audiences saw Tobey Maguire swinging through the skies of New York City), but according to Marvel legend Stan Lee, new franchise star Andrew Garfield is just as good as the original.

“I am Tobey Maguire’s biggest fan. He’s talented, he’s the nicest guy in the world, nobody could have done a better job on ‘Spider-Man’ than he did,” Stan — who co-created the iconic superhero in the ‘60s — told Access Hollywood’s Scott “Movie” Mantz at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival.

“But, Andrew Garfield brings his own charisma to this role and he’s as good as Tobey was,” Stan continued. “I think people are going to love him.”

And don’t expect a carbon copy of the original web-slinger in “The Amazing Spider-Man.”

“He doesn’t imitate Tobey, he does his own version of it,” Stan told Scott. “Just as Tobey was the essence of Peter Parker, so is Andrew Garfield.”

Adding,” You’ll love it!”

“The Amazing Spider-Man,” which also stars Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, swings into theaters on July 3.

Andrew Dices With Death On Spider-Man

Andrew Garfield had “near death experiences” every day on ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’.

The British actor takes over playing the role from Tobey Maguire in the forthcoming prequel – also starring Emma Stone – and he reveals he regularly had to undertake death-defying stunts during the shoot.

He said: “As you can see, a lot of the stunts are practical and grounded in reality.

“I would exhaust myself every day and get into near-death experiences every hour on the hour. I collaborated with the stunt team not only on the big stunt set-pieces but also on what happens to Peter’s body when he gets bitten. What happens to his DNA and how that effects the way he moves.”

Emma – who plays Gwen Stacy in the film, and has since gone on to become Andrew’s real life girlfriend – has also revealed she enjoyed the kiss they shared on the film.

She told a press conference in Japan: “You want to watch the movie and find out. You’ve got to decide if it’s iconic or not. We liked it.”

‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ is released later this year.

Andrew Admits To The Pressure Of The Amazing Spider-Man

Not just because of the fact Tobey [Maguire], [director] Sam [Raimi] and Miss [Kirsten] Dunst did incredible work and honored the vision of Stan Lee, but actually because of the further history of the character. Of Peter Parker, how he originated and all the original evolutions that he’s ever gone through.

I think if we didn’t feel any pressure, we wouldn’t be doing our jobs properly. It’s an important, mythical, fictional figure, that I know is deeply, deeply important to me personally. I think a healthy amount of pressure is probably a positive thing.

As you can see, a lot of the stunts are practical and grounded in reality. That was something that Marc [Webb], the director, really wanted to make sure happened in this movie to set it apart from previous ones… I would exhaust myself every day and get into near-death experiences every hour on the hour.

… I collaborated with [the stunt team] not only on the big stunt set-pieces but also on what happens to Peter’s body when he gets bitten. What happens to his DNA and how that effects the way he moves and the way he interacts with objects. The idea that he has spider DNA running in his system. What that will do to his sense of space. What that will do to the sensitivity of his skin. To have an opportunity to play in that forum with creative and talented people was a real opportunity and gift.
